By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Introduction Waterproofing and damp-proofing are terms frequently used in construction, sometimes as though they mean the same thing. They do not. Both are intended to control moisture, but the level of protection, exposure conditions and system requirements can be different. Understanding this distinction is important because selecting an inadequate system can result in persistent dampness, leakage, d

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Introduction Water is one of the most persistent causes of deterioration in buildings. A building may look structurally sound from the outside, yet water can slowly enter through terraces, bathrooms, balconies, basements, construction joints, cracks, pipe penetrations and other vulnerable areas. Once water finds a pathway into a building, the consequences can extend far beyond a simple damp patch. Wate

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Introduction Ready Mix Plaster has become an increasingly important part of modern construction. Compared with conventional site-mixed cement-sand plaster, factory-manufactured plaster offers the possibility of much greater control over: Raw materials Aggregate grading Binder proportioning Additives Mixing Packaging Batch consistency Site application But there is an important point that is sometimes mi

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Introduction Sand is one of the most important raw materials in Ready Mix Plaster. But not all sand behaves the same way. A manufacturer may have access to: River sand Crusher sand Manufactured sand Processed fine aggregate Screened quarry material The obvious question is: Which one is best for Ready Mix Plaster? The answer is not simply river sand, crusher sand, or manufactured sand. The real answer i

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Introduction When people talk about Ready Mix Plaster, attention often goes first to cement, polymers and other additives. But there is another component that can have an enormous influence on the behaviour of the plaster: Sand. Sand is not simply a low-cost filler added to increase volume. In a well-designed Ready Mix Plaster, the aggregate system has to work together with the cementitious binder and

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals When people talk about cement-based plaster, the first instinct is often simple: More cement = stronger plaster. But construction materials rarely work that way. Ready Mix Plaster is an engineered dry-mix system in which cement works together with graded aggregates, mineral components and performance additives. The objective is not to maximise the quantity of cement. The objective is to create the righ

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals A Ready Mix Plaster bag may look simple. But inside that bag is a carefully designed combination of binders, aggregates, fillers and performance additives. Two products can look almost identical and yet behave very differently on a wall. So how do you identify a good Ready Mix Plaster? The answer is not simply: “Which product is cheaper per bag?” A better evaluation looks at the complete system: Raw Ma

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals When you see a bag of Ready Mix Plaster on a construction site, it may look like a simple dry powder. But a properly manufactured Ready Mix Plaster is the result of several controlled steps. The quality of the finished product depends not only on the ingredients used, but also on: Raw Material Selection → Aggregate Grading → Proportioning → Dry Mixing → Quality Control → Packing → Storage This is what

What Is the Difference? By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals For generations, walls have been plastered using a simple combination of: Cement + Sand + Water It remains a widely used construction method. Ready Mix Plaster follows a different approach. Instead of proportioning the dry ingredients at the construction site, the plaster is formulated, proportioned and blended under controlled manufacturing conditions and supplied as a ready-to

A Practical Guide to Ready Mix Plaster for Modern Construction By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Plastering looks simple. Cement. Sand. Water. Apply it to the wall. But anyone who has managed a construction site knows that achieving consistent plaster quality is not always that simple. The quality of conventional plaster can vary because of changes in sand grading, cement proportion, water addition, mixing method, workmanship and site

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals The Guardian's Complete Guide to Tile Adhesives How to Select, Apply and Troubleshoot Tile Adhesives By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Choosing a tile adhesive should never begin with the question: "Which adhesive is the strongest?" It should begin with: "What does this installation actually require?" The tile, substrate, location, exposure, tile size, movement,

Tile adhesive failure is often blamed on the adhesive itself. But in many installations, the real problem begins before the adhesive has even had a chance to perform properly. A technically suitable adhesive can still fail when the substrate is poorly prepared, the mixing is incorrect, the wrong trowel is used, the adhesive is allowed to skin over, or the tile is not properly bedded. Tile installation is a system. Tile + adhesive + substrate + application method + site condit

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Exterior tile installation is not simply an indoor tiling job performed outside. Outdoor installations are exposed to conditions that can place greater demands on the complete tile-fixing system: SUN → HEAT → RAIN → MOISTURE → TEMPERATURE CHANGE → MOVEMENT The adhesive is only one part of that system. For long-term performance, the tile, adhesive, substrate, joints and installation method must all be c

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals A tile may look perfectly installed when the work is completed. Weeks or months later, however, a tile may become loose, move under pressure, develop cracks around the joints, or eventually detach from the substrate. This is known as tile debonding. But tile debonding is rarely caused by the adhesive alone. A successful tile installation depends on the complete system: TILE → ADHESIVE → SUBSTRATE → APP

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals A tile that sounds hollow is not automatically a failed tile installation. But a hollow-sounding area can sometimes indicate inadequate adhesive contact, voids beneath the tile, poor application technique, substrate irregularities, or insufficient coverage. The important question is not simply: “Does the tile sound hollow?” The better question is: “Why does it sound hollow, and does the condition indic

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Introduction Large-format tiles have changed modern flooring and wall applications. Larger porcelain, vitrified and stone tiles can create a premium appearance, but their installation also requires greater attention to adhesive coverage. One technique frequently discussed in professional tile installation is back-buttering. But what exactly does it mean? When is it useful? Is it required for every larg

By The Guardian – Protecting Every Structure When selecting a tile adhesive, buyers often compare products by the price of one bag. But that is not the complete calculation. A ₹500 bag is not necessarily more expensive than a ₹450 bag if the first adhesive provides better coverage and requires less material per square meter. For professional tile installation, the more meaningful question is: How much adhesive is actually required to install one square meter of tiles correctl

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Introduction One of the most common questions on a tile installation site is: “How thick should the tile adhesive be?” The answer is not simply “more is better.” Tile adhesive is a formulated bonding material. Its application thickness is part of the product's intended design and depends on the adhesive, substrate, tile, trowel and installation method. Applying too little adhesive can result in inadequ

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Introduction Two terms frequently appear in tile adhesive technical data sheets: Pot Life and Open Time. They are sometimes used interchangeably on construction sites. They should not be. They describe different stages of the tile adhesive installation process. Understanding the difference is important because an adhesive can be within its pot life while the adhesive already spread on the substrate may

By The Guardian – Chief Technical Advisor, GUGAFIX® Construction Chemicals Introduction A tile installation can look perfect from the surface and still have a problem underneath. One of the most important quality checks in professional tile installation is therefore adhesive coverage. It is not enough to know that adhesive was applied to the substrate. The installer must ensure that the adhesive is being transferred properly to the back of the tile and that the required cont
