G1 vs G2 vs G3 vs G4 Tile Adhesive: Which Tile Adhesive Should You Use?

  • Jul 10
  • 6 min read

Buying the most expensive tile adhesive does not guarantee a successful installation. Using the right adhesive for the right tile, substrate and application does.

Modern tile installation is no longer as simple as mixing cement and sand and fixing tiles.

Today, construction projects use ceramic tiles, vitrified tiles, large-format slabs, natural stones, glass mosaics, swimming-pool tiles and many other materials across internal floors, external walls, wet areas and demanding substrates.

Each application creates different performance requirements.

Yet one of the most common mistakes at construction sites is surprisingly simple:

Selecting tile adhesive only on the basis of price, recommendation from a dealer, or the assumption that one adhesive can be used everywhere.

The result can be hollow tiles, slipping on vertical surfaces, poor adhesion, cracked joints, debonding and, in serious cases, complete tile installation failure.

The correct approach is different.

Tile Type + Tile Size + Substrate + Location + Exposure Conditions = Correct Tile Adhesive Selection

Understanding this principle is essential before selecting any tile adhesive.

Why Are There Different Grades of Tile Adhesive?

A small ceramic tile installed on an internal floor does not create the same demands as a very large vitrified tile installed on an external wall.

Similarly, installing tiles over a cementitious substrate is different from installing new tiles over existing tiles.

Tile adhesives are therefore engineered with different levels of polymer modification, adhesion strength, flexibility, open time and resistance to movement.

The higher grade should not automatically be considered the correct product.

The objective is to select the adhesive whose performance matches the actual application.

At GUGAFIX®, our Grey Tile Adhesive range—G1, G2, G3 and G4—has been developed for progressively demanding tile installation requirements.

Let's understand the differences.

GUGAFIX® G1 Tile Adhesive

A Practical Solution for Small-Format Ceramic and Vitrified Tiles

GUGAFIX® G1 is a polymer-modified, grey cement-based tile adhesive designed for fixing small-format ceramic and vitrified tiles on internal and external walls and floors.

It is supplied as a factory-produced, premixed powder and is prepared for application by mixing it with the recommended quantity of clean water.

G1 is suitable for:

  • Small-format ceramic tiles.

  • Small-format vitrified tiles.

  • Internal walls.

  • Internal floors.

  • External walls and floors within the product's specified application requirements.

G1 is classified as Type 1 under IS 15477:2019 and C1 T under EN 12004, according to GUGAFIX® product specifications.

When should you consider G1?

When the tile format, substrate and service conditions are relatively straightforward and do not require the higher performance characteristics of more advanced adhesive grades.

The Guardian's Advice

Do not use a higher-grade adhesive simply because it is more expensive. Correct product selection improves both performance and project economics.

GUGAFIX® G2 Tile Adhesive

Higher Performance for Medium-Format Tiles and Tile-on-Tile Applications

As tile size and installation complexity increase, the adhesive must meet higher performance requirements.

GUGAFIX® G2 is a polymer-modified, grey cement-based adhesive developed for fixing medium-format ceramic and vitrified tiles on internal and external walls and floors.

It is also specified for tile-on-tile applications.

G2 provides increased adhesion performance compared with entry-level tile adhesive applications.

G2 is suitable for:

  • Medium-format ceramic tiles.

  • Medium-format vitrified tiles.

  • Internal walls and floors.

  • External walls and floors.

  • Tile-on-tile applications.

According to GUGAFIX® product specifications, G2 is classified as Type 2 under IS 15477:2019 and C2 TE under EN 12004.

When should you consider G2?

When you are working with medium-format tiles, more demanding applications, or installing new tiles over suitable existing tiled surfaces.

The Guardian's Advice

Tile-on-tile installation requires more than simply applying adhesive over old tiles. Surface inspection, cleaning and proper substrate preparation remain essential.

GUGAFIX® G3 Tile Adhesive

High-Performance Adhesive for Large-Format Tiles, Natural Stones and Demanding Applications

Large-format tiles introduce additional installation challenges.

As tile dimensions increase, achieving adequate adhesive coverage becomes more difficult.

Large tiles can also create greater stresses on the adhesive system.

GUGAFIX® G3 is a polymer-modified grey cement-based adhesive developed for fixing large-format ceramic and vitrified tiles on internal and external walls and floors.

The product is also suitable for applications involving marble, granite, other natural stones, glass mosaics, swimming-pool tiles and tile-on-tile installation, subject to proper substrate assessment and installation procedures.

G3 is suitable for:

  • Large-format ceramic tiles.

  • Large-format vitrified tiles.

  • Internal walls and floors.

  • External walls and floors.

  • Marble and granite.

  • Other suitable natural stones.

  • Glass mosaics.

  • Swimming-pool applications.

  • Tile-on-tile installation.

According to GUGAFIX® specifications, G3 is classified as Type 3 under IS 15477:2019 and C2 TE S1 under EN 12004.

The S1 classification indicates deformability, an increasingly important characteristic in demanding tile installations.

When should you consider G3?

When working with large-format tiles, natural stones or applications requiring increased adhesion and deformability compared with conventional tile adhesives.

The Guardian's Advice

Large-format tile installation is a system, not merely a product choice. Correct trowel selection, adhesive coverage, substrate flatness and back-buttering practices can be critical to successful installation.

GUGAFIX® G4 Tile Adhesive

Exceptionally Deformable Adhesive for Very Large-Format Tiles and Highly Demanding Applications

Very large-format tiles and demanding construction conditions require a more advanced adhesive system.

GUGAFIX® G4 is a highly polymer-modified, multipurpose and exceptionally deformable grey cement-based tile adhesive.

It is designed for the installation of very large-format ceramic and vitrified tiles on internal and external walls and floors while accommodating movement.

G4 is also suitable for various tiles and stones, including marble, granite, glass mosaics and swimming-pool tiles.

According to GUGAFIX® product specifications, G4 exceeds the S2 grade for transverse deformation and offers up to 8 mm of deformability.

The adhesive can be applied up to a 15 mm bed thickness, subject to application requirements and correct installation practices.

G4 is suitable for:

  • Very large-format ceramic tiles.

  • Very large-format vitrified tiles.

  • Internal walls and floors.

  • External walls and floors.

  • Marble.

  • Granite.

  • Suitable natural stones.

  • Glass mosaics.

  • Swimming pools.

  • Tile-on-tile installation.

  • Highly demanding applications requiring increased deformability.

According to GUGAFIX® specifications, G4 is classified as Type 4 under IS 15477:2019 and C2 TE S2 under EN 12004.

When should you consider G4?

When the installation involves very large-format tiles, demanding service conditions or applications requiring exceptionally high deformability.

The Guardian's Advice

Higher-performance adhesives cannot compensate for poor workmanship, weak substrates or incorrect installation procedures. Product selection and application quality must work together.

7 Questions to Ask Before Selecting a Tile Adhesive

Before buying or specifying tile adhesive, ask:

  1. What type of tile or stone is being installed?

Ceramic, vitrified, porcelain, marble, granite and glass mosaics can have different installation requirements.

  1. What is the size and weight of the tile?

Increasing tile dimensions can significantly change adhesive and installation requirements.

  1. Where will the tiles be installed?

Internal floor, external wall, bathroom, balcony and swimming pool applications do not experience identical service conditions.

  1. What is the substrate?

Concrete, plaster, screed, existing tiles and other substrates require proper assessment and preparation.

  1. Will the installation experience movement or temperature variation?

External applications and certain substrates may require adhesives with increased deformability.

  1. Is the installer using the correct application method?

Correct mixing, trowel selection, adhesive coverage, open-time control and tile placement are essential.

  1. Has the correct adhesive grade been selected?

Using an under-specified product increases installation risk.

Using an unnecessarily high-performance product can increase project cost without providing meaningful additional value.

The Most Expensive Tile Adhesive Is Not Always the Right Tile Adhesive

Professional construction is about correct specification.

The objective should not be to use the cheapest adhesive.

Nor should it be to use the most expensive adhesive everywhere.

The objective is to select the correct adhesive according to the requirements of the tile installation system.

That means understanding:

Tile Type → Tile Size → Substrate → Location → Service Conditions → Installation Method → Correct Adhesive

This approach improves performance, reduces unnecessary costs and lowers the risk of tile installation failure.
